The Marda Loop Communities Association (MLCA) is excited to invite local artists to submit proposals for the Utility Box Public Art Program. This is a project, funded by the Calgary Arts Development and the City of Calgary transforms ordinary utility boxes into vibrant works of art that reflect the spirit and creativity of our community. Since 2010, this initiative has partnered with local artists to enhance public throughout Calgary, brightening our streets, deterring graffiti and contributing to a unique, artistic identity while creating visual impact on our neighbourhoods.
About the Program:
This program provides funding for community organizations to collaborate with artists to create temporary artworks on local utility boxes for up to 5 years. The (MLCA) is seeking an artist or artists who can bring their artistic vision and skills to design and execute a painted or vinyl mural for a utility box in our area.
Program Goals:
- Add creativity and beauty to public spaces, enhances community identity and pride, prevents vandalism and graffiti; and provides opportunities for local artists to showcase their work.

As a participant in this year’s utility Box program, the Marda Loop community is looking for an artistic project that:
- Aligns with our mission: The Marda Loop Communities Association strives to uphold the spirit of our vision; We are an evolving, vibrant, urban community that is engaged – connected – and desirable.
- Encourages people to walk and explore the communities within Marda Loop – South Calgary, Garrison Woods, Altadore and Marda Loop
- Highlights the natural features of our communities – our parks, trees, historical houses and the redevelopment
Eligibility:
- This opportunity is open to local artists, including emerging and established talent, with experience in public art or mural creation;
- Artists can apply individually or in teams.
Requirements:
- Selected artists will be responsible for designing and installing the artwork on the utility box;
- Artists must be able to meet project deadlines and adhere to all guidelines set by the Utility Box Public Art Program;
- Applicants should have a demonstrated ability to manage public art projects, including design, installation, and working within community guidelines; and
- Selected artists will receive funding to cover project costs, including materials, artist fees, and installation.
Criteria for Selection:
- Artistic quality, creativity and experience with murals and/or utility box art
- Relevance of the design to the local community and environment;
- Viability of the design (feasibility of installation on utility boxes);
- Commitment to the project timeline and guidelines;
Budget:
- Artist Fee: $1,750 per artist or team for designing and installing the artwork.
- Materials Fee: Up to $800 to cover the cost of materials needed for the artwork (e.g., paint, brushes, protective coating, vinyl, etc.).
