Notice – June 2nd, 2023:

We are preparing for a June construction kick-off for the Marda Loop Main Streets project. Construction will occur from June to November, and will take place in a phased approach. Understanding the unique character and dynamics of Marda Loop, we aim to maintain and grow the area’s vibrancy. We are working closely with the Marda Loop BIA to ensure Calgary knows Marda Loop is still open to enjoy, including the Marda Gras festival and summer Night Markets.

We know that improving safety for people walking, cycling, and driving in the area is a key priority for people who live, work, visit, and travel through Marda Loop. By creating new sidewalks, a multi-use pathway, and improved pedestrian crossings we are working to create safe and reliable experiences through speed separation, improved visibility, and accessibility.

Construction is variable. Although we do our best to plan accordingly to reduce the impacts on residents, construction in an older community like Marda Loop means that sometimes we run into surprises. We don’t anticipate any issues, but timelines could change should we discover any unexpected conditions. We expect to see adjustments to our schedule throughout the construction season, and our project page will be updated regularly with any schedule changes.

Though detailed 2023 construction schedule is currently being confirmed, we expect to start to work on 33 Avenue S.W. at 20 and/or 22 Streets the week of June 12.

To support the community through these first stages of work, we are hosting two virtual information sessions on June 12. The project team will provide an update on the anticipated timing of construction, where the community can expect to see activity, and how to prepare for construction. The same content will be presented at both sessions, which are scheduled at different times. We will also record a presentation, which we’ll post on the website after for those unable to attend.

Notice – May 10th, 2023:

We’re pleased to share that we’ve selected a contractor. We are now finalizing construction timing, approach, and more. Work will begin in June, however our team will be doing some prep work this month. The two major pieces the community will see are:

• Signal infrastructure installation at four intersections along 33 and 34 Avenues S.W.
• Tree removals to accommodate the future road reorganization.

Below is more information about each of these items. We’re finalizing letters that will be sent to the community as soon as possible. We’ll also update our website, distribute a newsletter, and the team will be door knocking to those particularly impacted to raise awareness.

Signal Infrastructure

• Starting Monday, May 15, our team will begin upgrading and installing permanent signal light infrastructure at four intersections along 33 and 34 Avenues S.W.
• We have scheduled the work in phases over approx. one month to avoid larger detours, parking restrictions, and other impacts to businesses/residents.
• While the signals will not, be operation this preliminary work is necessary so we can efficiently move along 34 Avenue this summer when construction begins in earnest.
• We know on-street parking restrictions are of particular issue with the community, and we will work with our contractor to ensure all protocols are followed with regards to notification and need.

Tree Removals

• One of the primary benefits of this project is that the reorganized streetscape will accommodate safe and accessible travel for those walking, cycling, wheeling, and driving. This reorganization means that some tree loss is unavoidable.
• Approximately 99 trees will need to be removed and replaced to facilitate construction of the project. The removals will take place at one time to minimize the impacts on area wildlife and the community.
• To compensate for the tree loss and to help restore the urban canopy, we will be replanting 100+ new trees in the closest suitable locations.
• Our project team will be walking through the community later this month to conduct a final assessment and post notices on trees approved to be removed. These notices will be up at least 10 days prior to removal, per City policy.
