Notice – March 14, 2023
A message from the City and Main Streets Team:
Marda Loop Main Streets March Detour Updates:
|
We have learned of several upcoming detours to support the work of our partners at ATCO and ENMAX. These date estimates are weather dependent, and are outlined in the maps below.
33 Avenue from 19 to 20 Streets S.W. will be a one-way, westbound traffic for the month of March. This is required to support ATCO’s gas line relocation work.·
Northbound traffic will be restricted from 34 Avenue at 19 Street S.W. from March 5 to 13. Local traffic only will be permitted on 19 Street south of 33 Avenue S.W. in support of ENMAX’s underground work.·
The north sidewalk on 36 Avenue east of 19 Street S.W. will be closed March 5 to 14, also in support of ENMAX’s underground work. Flaggers will be onsite to support traffic and pedestrians in the area during the closure. |

We want to thank the Marda Loop community for its continued support and patience during the engagement, planning and construction processes. |
To support conversations with property owners, businesses, and residents along 34 Avenue S.W., our team has created an animated video.
It shows how our work will transform 34 Avenue S.W. this year, highlighting the benefits achieved by reorganizing the road and using the City-owned road-right-of-way. We hope it will help the community visualize the safer sidewalks and intersections, increased connectivity, and new multi-use pathway connected to The City’s Pathway and Bikeway Network (5A). We know retaining on-street parking and two-way traffic is also of importance to the community, so it reiterates that we’re accomplishing both of these goals with the road reorganization
Notice – November 30, 2023
Good news! Two-way traffic will return to 33rd Avenue for the winter starting on Monday, December 4. Check out the latest update from The Main Streets Team on their web page: calgary.ca/mardaloop. One-way traffic remains on 34th Avenue to accommodate ongoing utility burial work.
Note: The City sent an email out about this on November 24. if you did not receive it, make sure that you are signed up on the City’s email list to receive info about Main Streets construction – sign up here.
Tree Removals
- One of the primary benefits of this project is that the reorganized streetscape will accommodate safe and accessible travel for those walking, cycling, wheeling, and driving. This reorganization means that some tree loss is unavoidable.
- Approximately 99 trees will need to be removed and replaced to facilitate construction of the project. The removals will take place at one time to minimize the impacts on area wildlife and the community.
- To compensate for the tree loss and to help restore the urban canopy, we will be replanting 100+ new trees in the closest suitable locations.
- Our project team will be walking through the community later this month to conduct a final assessment and post notices on trees approved to be removed. These notices will be up at least 10 days prior to removal, per City policy.
